Update – Now its Time for the Workshop

Update: I’ve had a wonderful response to my previous Blog announcing our Final Closing Down Sale and quite a number of baskets are already sold. I’ve updated the web site to indicate the SOLD baskets Oh, and I forgot to add a link the the web site – its: www.wieskampnantuckets.com.

With no more basket making, Gene has decided its time to sell off some of his tools. 😘😘
He would like to sell them locally, or at least to a woodworker who lives within a reasonable driving to Ocala, Florida and as a total lot – not individually.

All the pieces of equipment that are for sale are mounted on stands or a bench, which will go with the item.  The asking price for the entire lot is $400.00 OBO.

Items are:

Craftsman Lathe – 4-speed Belt Drive; maximum turning: 8 ½” diameter; 30” long; with variable turning tools and assorted 2” thick cherry; maple; and walnut pieces.

Ryobi 18” Mini Lathe; variable speed.

Sears Craftsman 10” Radial-Arm Circular Saw

Craftsman 4” x 36” Belt/Disk Sander

Delta 7 ½” wide band saw – uses 56 1/8” saw bands

If you know of anyone who might be interested in this equipment, please tell them where they can get a really good deal! We’ll also post locally on Craig’s List as well.

Again, our telephone number is: (352) 351 3533 – if we are not available, please leave a call back number, with your name and a convenient time to call.

Final Discount – Really Closing Down!

Yes, the site, and the business, is finally being closed down, and will no longer be available after 31 July, 2018!

Its been a wonderful twenty-plus years that we have been in business, making baskets, teaching baskets, and participating in Art Shows, primarily in Florida, but also a few in other states as well.

As of today, all our remaining baskets have been reduced by 40%, and will be shipped FREE!

At our last show…..

And these are all that are still available!

I would prefer payment by check, or PayPal. But if using a credit card is a customer’s only option, that would be acceptable.

Gene & I would like to thank all our loyal customers; our great students; and all those friends and supporters who stopped by our booth when at the Art Shows.

And to all of you who purchased our molds – it was a sad day seeing them all go out the door, and we do sincerely hope you will all enjoy using them and make wonderful baskets on them.

Some of our molds – before we sold them off!

And now the cupboards are almost bare!

We wish you all good health, happiness and much prosperity.

Lorraine & Gene

They are all Sold!

Yes, thanks to a wonderful response, all our molds have been SOLD!

Thank you to everyone who has visited this blog, and especially to those who have purchased our molds. As of now, they are all sold, with the exception of the small nesting set!

It will be sad to see the empty spaces they all occupied! We have been making, selling and teaching Nantucket Baskets for over 20 years! Along the way, we’ve made many wonderful friends, both in our classes and during the art shows we’ve participated in. We are truly grateful for all the wonderful compliments we’ve received, and especially for the awards we’ve won over the years at several Florida Fine Art shows.

It will seem strange not actually making even the occasional basket – with all the molds sold, there will be no more baskets, even for “special” customers!

We have really enjoyed the work, the camaraderie during our classes, and the interesting and friendly people/customers we met during the shows.

To everyone we’ve met along the way, a very heartfelt thank you for your support.

The baskets we still have on hand are of course still available on our web site, which won’t be shut down till the middle of the year. And I am also posting baskets on ETSY should you prefer to purchase there. Only a couple listed so far, but I will add others as time permits.

Once again, Thank You to all our friends, customers and students.

And a special Thank You to my wonderful friend Phil Davis for his patience, help, and guidance along the way, without whom I would not have a web site, nor would my blog posting ever have been published.

Sincerely,

Lorraine & Gene

Molds For Sale

My goodness – what an incredible response we have had to the posting of our “For Sale” molds! Browse the listing below, and you will see which molds are sold, and which are still available. And we do have some bases/handles also.

Some of our round molds have not been posted – we have a 6″ and 8″ “Wieskamp” mold available, as well as a set of nesting molds for a small nest, 6 molds, one each: 8″, 7″, 6″, 5″, 4″, 3″. These baskets require an outside rim from flat oval, and an inside rim of flat reed and brass ears to attach the handles. They make a very attractive nest when completed.

We will ship the mold to you, but shipping is not included in the price – it will vary depending the the size, weight and destination.

Final Steps to Closing the Business

Molds, molds, & molds

Yes, the business is finally closing! We still have a number of baskets on hand to sell, check the web site for availability. And now we are beginning to sell off our molds and other miscellaneous supplies.

We have molds and the related rim mold for every style of basket we have on the web site, and a few others as well.

My next posting will be a complete list of what is available, with prices.

Going out of Business Update

The time has finally come when we have decided to “retire” from our Nantucket Basket business.

We have thoroughly enjoyed the past 20 years or so that we’ve been making, selling and teaching these beautiful baskets. We’ve shared our talent and expertise with a considerable number of students, several of whom have become really great friends – friendships we sincerely hope will continue for many years to come.

We still have a number of finished baskets on hand, which are available for purchase at a somewhat discounted price. If you would love to have yet another of our baskets, please call or e-mail.

And in time, we will sell off any of our molds, the rim molds that go along with them and some bases. For anyone who might be interested in a mold, e-mail me and I will send you a list. We’d like to see them go to good homes where they will be taken care of and put to good use!

The images below are of some of the baskets we still have on hand, and the molds, most of which we will sell.  And there are rim molds for each basket as well.

Winding Down …

After a very successful business for twenty-plus years, we have decided to wind down our business.

While ever we still have finished baskets on hand, and materials to make special orders, we will be happy to work with customers.

I have taken photos of most of what we have on hand, though a couple of those have sold before I could get this blog posting completed! And though a professional photographer/tutor has been TRYING to teach me how to take better images, and post-edit them, I have to agree with the old saying ‘its hard to teach an old dog new tricks! But I’m sure you’ll overlook the bad images, and just focus on the baskets.

We hope there will be something to catch your attention … and we look forward to hearing from you

January update and “SPECIAL”

We haven’t been making too many baskets of late, it was a slow Christmas season for us, but thats OK, we seem to be having plenty of visits to our site, and hopefully, when the time is right, orders will come in.

I’m a little late with this posting, but…for January our SPECIAL is a 3Qt Ice Bucket with walnut lid, base and handle. It has a spiral running through it to add some dimension/interest. It was created in 2009, so it is already developing the lovely patina that Nantucket baskets are noted for, and that make them especially attractive. Check it out – its never too early to be thinking about, and purchasing, spring/summer wedding gifts. And if walnut is not the favorite wood of choice, check with us and we’ll be happy to make one in either cherry or maple.

Very soon, look for a basket or two on the website www.Etsy.com – a website devoted to selling handmade art, craft and vintage pieces. Its not an auction site – the price you see is the price you pay! I will occasionally post one or two baskets.

A Special Project

Not long ago, our Church was in need of new collection baskets.  We volunteered to make a collection of twelve 12″ and two 10″ round baskets. All were constructed with cherry bases, maple ribs, and stained reed rims.  The following are a few images taken at different stages during the process.

The Making of a Special Purse

Some time ago, a customer who has really become a friend, asked us to make a very special clutch purse for her soon-to-be daughter-in-law.  After much discussion, and in consultation with her son’s fiancee, she settled on a clutch purse.

Nothing like having a pint-sized supervisor to keep a check on your work!  In this image, weaving the bottom half of the purse is underway.

Now just let me check to see if you have it all done properly???

Polly asked if we could have dragon fly carved in ivory for the top, as dragon flies were special to her father who passed away in 2001 and who she was going to miss very much at her wedding.

DELS came through with a truly beautiful carving; and after a little searching through Gene’s large coffee can of pennies, we found a 1952 penny – the year he was born – to put in the base of the purse.  There is also an engraved quarter board with her name on the inside of the top section of the clutch.

The finished purse is so beautiful, I truly had problems parting with it.
